Nzingha “Zing” Ashford is an actress, singer and dancer who was born in Detroit, MI and raised in Saginaw, MI. Although she excelled in academics, she showed an intense interest in the arts at a very early age. Her stellar artistic ability was confirmed as she performed in the church choir and in various school and community talent shows. By the age of 10, she was determined that acting was the only career path for her and she has never deviated from that path. After graduating Valedictorian from high school she was awarded a full-ride scholarship to Howard University in Washington, DC where she studied Theatre Arts. After graduating college, she moved to New York City to further pursue a career in TV and Film.
In addition to the dedicated staff of the Howard University Theatre Arts department, Nzingha has also had the privilege of additional training under the tutelage of accomplished instructors such as Vera Katz, Anthony Abeson, and Joseph Perlman.
Some of her recent credits include the lead role in “Killer Rivalry”, a 2022 sports thriller for the Lifetime Movie Network, a supporting role in the feature film “Caste” written and directed by Award Winning filmmaker Ava Duvernay, and another appearance on an upcoming DC series “Gotham Knights” on The CW. Musically she has performed throughout the U.S. and internationally with the Howard University gospel choir. She was also a member of a musical ensemble along with Gospel greats, Yolanda Adams and Kierra Sheard, who saluted President Barack Obama in his BET/Whitehouse farewell celebration in 2015. A month later, she performed in the dedication of the celebrity studded opening of the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History in Washington D.C. When Zing is not on stage or on screen, you can find her fulfilling another one of her passions; giving back to the youth. She’s worked in various roles with children from being a nanny, to coaching acting, to being a fun and energetic counselor at local children’s camps.
Nzingha’s mission is to create art that will challenge the minds of those who experience it, provide a means of catharsis to those who ingest it, promote understanding of different points of view, and inspire positive and introspective change in people. In her own words, “ I am alive to lend my voice, body, and emotional palate to a cause that is much bigger than me; healing the world through art.” Nzingha is represented by Stewart Talent.
