KEET - AI Governance Policy

A Synopsis: KEET’s Use of AI

  • AI Assists, People Decide – KEET may use AI tools to support tasks such as organizing information, generating transcripts, or improving efficiency. However, all decisions regarding content, programming, and community engagement remain in human hands.

  • No AI-Generated News or Journalism – KEET’s own news and stories are researched, written, and produced by professional journalists. In cases where KEET includes reports that were produced by independent journalists, every effort will be made to ensure that the content meets KEET’s AI policies. AI does not write or report the news.

  • Transparency and Responsibility – If AI contributes to public-facing content in any way that is not already addressed in this document, its role will be clearly disclosed on our web site. KEET does not use AI to generate misleading or manipulative content.

  • Protecting Privacy – KEET does not use AI to collect, track, or process personal data beyond what is necessary for regular station operations.

As AI technology continues to progress, KEET remains committed to ethical and responsible use that supports, rather than replaces, the human connection at the heart of public media. We encourage open conversations with our community about our AI practices.

AI systems are evolving at a staggering pace.  KEET may edit this policy in order to take changes in AI technology into account.  KEET will maintain a log of those edits on its web site HERE.

For a deeper look into KEET’s AI policies, see below.

1. Data Privacy and Security

Use:

  • No personal data will be entered into any AI system. If donor-related data is used in AI-driven tasks, donors will only be identified by donor numbers to maintain privacy.
  • AI assists KEET in decision-making but does not operate autonomously.

Data Collection:

  • KEET follows a data minimization approach, collecting only what is necessary for operational effectiveness.
  • While KEET ensures that its own data use is compliant with its AI use policies, it cannot fully guarantee that external research sources have not used AI-generated content. Staff will make reasonable efforts to verify the authenticity of research materials.

Risk Mitigation:

  • Staff Training: All staff will be trained on appropriate AI usage, including data restrictions and compliance.
  • Minimizing Bias: By omitting personal data, KEET reduces the risk of bias or discriminatory outcomes in AI-supported analysis.
  • Third-Party Considerations: KEET will review AI model terms and conditions to assess whether external AI tools retain and train on input data.

Who Uses the Data:

  • KEET will train staff on the use of AI powered systems to ensure compliance with this policy.
  • AI-generated data will not be sold or shared externally beyond KEET-controlled systems, applications, and models.

2. AI Implementation at KEET

Uses and Restrictions:

  • Keeping the “I” in AI – KEET uses AI to refine, enhance, and build upon existing staff-created content. AI does not generate content independently or create material “from scratch.”
  • Collaboration, Not Replacement – AI assists in maintaining consistency in tone, style, and messaging across KEET’s communications but is never the sole creator of content.
  • Efficiency Gains – AI will be used to automate routine tasks, such as donor segmentation and personalized messaging, to improve operational workflows.
  • Person-First Approach – Human oversight remains central. All AI-generated content undergoes review, editing, and approval before publication or distribution to ensure quality and alignment with KEET’s brand values.
  • Automated Systems – Some AI tools, such as YouTube auto-generated subtitles or AI-generated  voice-overs, may operate without manual review, depending on resource constraints.

3. Monitoring and Oversight

Audits and Compliance

  • KEET will conduct regular assessments to ensure compliance with this policy.
  • The Executive Director, Director of Engineering & Operations, Data Analyst, and Digital Content Manager will oversee AI program updates to ensure alignment with policy standards.
  • Policy updates will be communicated to staff to ensure continuous adherence.

4. AI-Generated Visual and Audio Content

Current Status:

  • KEET does not use AI-generated photos or videos in on-air broadcasts, YouTube, or PBS app content (including digital-only content).
  • While AI-generated images have been used sparingly in event promotions as a last resort, KEET continues to evaluate their ethical implications, quality, and long-term viability.
  • The station may explore AI-generated audio tools (e.g., promo voiceovers) in the future but will assess the need for human oversight in such cases.

5. Transparency

Commitment to Open Disclosure

  • KEET will publicly disclose its AI use policies.
  • While KEET ensures transparency in its own AI practices, it cannot fully verify whether third-party sources (e.g., research materials) were influenced by AI-generated content. Staff will strive to vet sources appropriately.
  • AI-related disclosures will be maintained on a dedicated page on KEET’s website for public access.
