KEET Ready to Learn

Special Events

KEET-TV's Ready to Learn service is dedicated to being active in the community. Here are some of our events:

KEET KIDS CLUB
In partnership with the Humboldt Arts Council and the Morris Graves Museum of Art, KEET's Ready To Learn Service will offer FREE monthly workshops for children, families, and childcare providers.
These monthly workshops will be lead by Jackie Hamilton and take place on the first Saturday of every month 9 from 12-2pm. The workshops are geared to provide opportunities for youth (2-8 years old) to develop critical reading and comprehension skills.
Based on the learning triangle, workshops will be comprised of viewing a segment of PBS Kid’s programming, reading several short stories, and doing art activities to incorporate the material. And each family will take home a FREE BOOK! These free monthly events are sponsored by First5 Humboldt, Humboldt Area Foundation, The Humboldt Arts Council, and KEET-TV.

SPECIAL GUESTS AND CHARACTERS
Throughout the years thousands of individuals have had the opportunity to meet a myriad of favorite characters from public television programs. Many of our most beloved special guests come from the children's line-up of programs, including a day of reading and activity when Arthur visited, learning about going to the Doctor with Elmo, and exercising our body and mind with Celina the dance teacher from Sesame Street. One special visitor, Mr. McFeely from Mister Rogers' Neighborhood, brought associate producer Hedda Sharapan with him in 1997 to give a workshop to area childcare providers on "Educational Building Blocks for Children." Maya & Miguel visited us for Dia De Los Ninos that we have celebrated for the last two years. In November 2009, Buddy The T-Rex from DINOSAUR TRAIN will visit the North Coast. Check here for details of Buddy The T-Rex's visit to the North Coast!

FAMILY FUN NIGHTS
Family Fun Night programs are an opportunity for your school to invite families to visit in the evening for an evening filled with fun, educational activities hosted by KEET-TV Ready To Learn. Each program features at least six activities based on a PBS program, giving participants ideas about how to extend the learning from the television programs they watch. Activities are generally layered to meet the needs of kindergarteners through fifth grade students, or preschooler specific. Family Fun Night Events are always based on PBS programming, and can meet individual school needs.

KEET-TV YOUNG WRITERS' CELEBRATION
Since 1995, KEET-TV 13 has participated in the annual Reading Rainbow Young Writers and Illustrators Contest, which was a national contest encouraging children from kindergarten to third grade to write and illustrate their own stories. Since the first year, more than 700 stories have been turned in to Channel 13 and independently judged on creativity in story writing and illustrating. Local entrants have received national recognition including a first grade finalist in 1995 and a third grader in 1999 whose story was selected to air on the national program ZOOM. All of the winning entries have been produced by KEET-TV producers and are broadcast numerous times on KEET. This year we had a great turn out with close to 150 different stories, all of them were so great and it was very hard to choose just 4 winning entries. This is a great opportunity to showcase the diverse talent and imaginations of the young people of Humboldt and Del Norte Counties. For rules and information about this years contests running from January 7th to March 14th 2008 click on the links here.
