Shapes:  "When a Line Ends a Shape Begins

This month the art lesson will be all about shapes. After studying works by Henri Matisse we will view a Sesame Street Word on the Street video about shapes and read the free book of the month When a Line Ends a Shape Begins. For activity time we will put our creative talents to use by drawing animals Ed Emberly style using 4-5 basic shapes, turning lines of yarn into sticky paper shape collages, sculpt with chenille stems, and create tissue paper collages in the style of Henri Matisse.

Upcoming 2010 topics and free storybook are:
October 2          Textures    "You Can't Taste a Pickle with Your Ear"
November 6      Color          "White Rabbits Color Book"
December 4       Light          "All About Light"

When Families Grieve:
Wednesday September 23, 2010  KEET-TV's Ready To Learn Service will join with Hospice of Humboldt for a parent/provider workshop on talking to children about death.  Ready To Learn will be discussing and handing out FREE copies of the Sesame Workshop kit that coincides with the When Families Grieve special that aired during prime time on KEET-TV, April 15 2010.  The kit includes a DVD of the episode along with storybooks and parenting tips.  For more information or to register for the workshop call Sherri Witt at 445-8443.

SESAME WORKSHOP WHEN FAMILIES GRIEVE KITS:  As Mr. Rogers always said, "Anything that is mentionable is manageable." Experiencing death is not a matter of "if"  but only "when," and no matter how young they are, children need our reassurance and guidance to work through this part of living.  This kit will help adults be prepared for when that time comes.  Produced by Sesame Workshop this kit includes a DVD that shows families discussing the loss of a parent, story books to help open the discussion with children, and suggestions for adult/child together activities.

The workshop of choice for September is "Starting School" with an emphasis on creating bully-free school zones. This workshop is based on the "Operation Respect, Don't Laugh at Me" curriculum created by Peter Yarrow of Peter, Paul and Mary. Particpantss will learn a myriad of social, emotional and character education activities that will help create safe, nurturing environments. This curriculum is much like the Challenge Day curriculum used in secondary schools, but why wait that long to teach children the joys of growing up in peaceful places. For more information or to arrange a workshop on your site call Jackie at 496-6712.

CALL JACKIE AT 496-6712 FOR QUESTIONS ABOUT ANY OF THE ABOVE ACTIVITIES
