KEET-TV ASKS THE QUESTION: DO YOU FEEL THAT LOVE AND FORGIVENESS HAVE THE POWER TO HEAL? JOIN IN THE CAMPAIGN FOR LOVE AND FORGIVENESS TO TALK ABOUT IT.

KEET-TV continues its fourth year of participation in a national Campaign for Love & Forgiveness, an initiative that combines public television programming, community activities and events, and on-line discussions to encourage contemplation and conversation about how love and forgiveness can effect meaningful change in individuals and society. Initiated by the nonprofit Fetzer Institute (www.fetzer.org), the campaign encourages community conversations throughout the United States, inviting participants to connect and share on the topics of love and forgiveness. KEET-TV is one of only six PBS stations in the country to receive outreach grant funding, along with the American Library Association and Story Corps, to partner with The Fetzer Institute on this campaign.

Studio S

717 3rd Street, Eureka

The Third Annual Open Heart Show will take place at Studio S (717 3rd St between H and I in Eureka). This event marks the third year that The Ink People Center for the Arts and KEET-TV’s Campaign For Love and Forgiveness have presented an exhibit of local artwork representing love, compassion, altruism and forgiveness. Megan Workman, the curator and founder of the Open Heart Show is receiving entries of artwork conveying themes of love and forgiveness at Studio S on Saturday, March 27 from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. In addition to curating the show, Workman had to do some creative logistical work to find an alternate exhibition space after the Ink People’s building was damaged by the earthquake in January. The Open Heart Show will be hosted by Studio S with an opening reception taking place during Arts Alive on Saturday, April 3. During opening night of the 2008 debut exhibit, Ink People executive director, Libby Maynard stated, “the roof nearly lifted off the building” from the power of the show’s work around the themes of love and forgiveness. The Open Heart Show is funded in part by KEET-TV and the Campaign for Love and Forgiveness. For more information, contact Megan at 864/353.4029 or Workman.Meg@gmail.com.

Through local partnerships with Humboldt State University’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) and The Westhaven Center for the Arts, KEET-TV is offering two courses beginning this February: Four Conversations About Love and Four Conversations About Forgiveness.

Four Conversations About Love and Forgiveness

Mondays from February 1 through February 22 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m.

the Westhaven Center for the Arts.

In these conversations, facilitated by Cascadia Center for Leadership founder and former Humboldt County Supervisor, Julie Fulkerson, up to 25 participants will have a safe and comfortable environment to speak honestly about their experiences and to listen and respond to each other—and to themselves—with encouragement and compassion. Conversation participants will examine the role forgiveness can play in alleviating anger and grief, as well as the physical, mental and spiritual benefits that come with forgiveness. Each conversation has a specific focus, and uses a clip from the film The Power of Forgiveness, a PBS documentary, to spark reflection and dialogue.

The first conversation focuses on the nature of forgiveness, helping participants understand their own attitudes and beliefs and explore what forgiveness is–and is not. The second conversation builds on the initial exploration, looking at the ways in which forgiveness can benefit our health and well-being. Conversation Three takes participants further in their journey to forgiveness, examining the different ways that forgiveness can occur. The final conversation delves deeper into the area of self-forgiveness, which is something that can be more difficult for some people than forgiving others.

Four Conversations About Love

Wednesdays from February 17 through March 10 from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. through the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute

Humboldt Bay Aquatic Center.

In these four conversations facilitated by Cheryl Johnson, a career/life coach and former psychology professor, participants will explore how love and forgiveness can effect positive change in individuals and communities. In each of the four conversations about love, Johnson will use film clips from the PBS documentary The Mystery of Love to stimulate discussion on the many personal and social expressions of love. Participants will also identify actions they can take to more consciously use the power of love to heal and transform their lives and communities. The topic for

Conversation One on February 17 is “Emotion, Energy, Practice, Force” and the question of “What is Love?” Conversation Two on February 24 will cover “Nature and Nurture and “The Power of Love.” The topic for Conversations Three is “When It Is Hard to Love.” Conversation Four will revolve around working “For the Benefit of Others” and “Kindness, Altruism and Volunteering.”

Each course is offered free of charge through a community outreach grant to KEET-TV from the Fetzer Institute. Registration for the courses is recommended as space is limited.

About the Campaign The Campaign for Love & Forgiveness, a project of the Fetzer Institute, is a community engagement initiative that encourages people to bring love and forgiveness into the heart of individual and community life. Through facilitated conversations in six cities and our web site, we offer activities and a variety of curricula. The resources on the site are available for anyone’s use. Since its launch in 2006, the campaign has touched thousands of people. Early data suggests the campaign is having an impact. At least 70% of participants in facilitated conversations—from Rochester, New York to San Diego, California—reported that as a result of their participation in the Campaign for Love & Forgiveness conversations, they would be more likely to: * Forgive themselves for mistakes * Forgive others who are close to them * Consider offering forgiveness as a response to a difficult situation * Talk with friends about forgiveness or being more forgiving * Choose to forgive someone rather than being angry at them

"We must develop and maintain the capacity to forgive. The one who is devoid of the power to forgive is devoid of the power to love. Forgiveness is not an occasional act. It is a permanent attitude." -- Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. quoted in The Words of Martin Luther King, Jr.

“We are a gift to one another…the world is in our hands.” -- Desmond Tutu

DO YOU FEEL THAT CHOOSING LOVE AND FORGIVENESS HAS THE POWER

TO TRANSFORM LIVES?

Did you know that:
¨ Love may actually be good for your health?
¨ Acts of kindness can lead to a greater sense of security and safety in both givers and receivers, and a desire to pass that kindness on?
¨ Not only may prejudice and discrimination be reduced through friendly interactions with people from groups outside our own, but empathy, respect and even love for these “others” can be enhanced by these interactions?

Join us to explore the power of love and forgiveness for yourself and your community! One by one, it’s possible to make change happen.

We are pleased to invite you to join KEET-TV, The Center for Spiritual Living, Dell' Arte International, Humboldt Area Foundation, Humboldt Community Breast Health Project, KGOE-AM, KHUM-FM, Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI), in our Campaign for Love and Forgiveness, an unprecedented multi-year community-engagement initiative, sponsored by the Fetzer Institute. Through public television programming, radio programming, local activities, and thoughtful conversations in communities across the country, we will explore the mystery and meaning of love, and we’ll consider the potential power of love and forgiveness to effect transformation and healing in our personal lives, our professional lives, and our communities.

Would you like to participate in or organize a group discussion of FOUR CONVERSATIONS ABOUT FORGIVENESS OR LOVE?

The Fetzer Institute has created curriculum to help individuals connect with each other on the topic of love and forgiveness. By using this curriculum, groups or families can explore such questions as Why forgive? Why not forgive? Does forgiveness come naturally to us? What are the benefits of forgiveness? Why do people forgive? What are the different beliefs about forgiveness? The conversations give participants an opportunity to view portions of the film and to explore personal experiences, knowledge and feelings about forgiveness. Through the use of video, brief reading and group participation, we will explore aspects of forgiveness from the personal to the community level. This is not a lecture course. The experience will be most successful if all participants are available for all four sessions.

Content & Methodology: This is a discussion course. Readings and video clips will illuminate the topics including Different Beliefs about Forgiveness, Internal and External Forgiveness, The Relationship of Forgiveness to health, relationships, schools, workplaces, communities and beyond; Forgiving Yourself and Others.

The Fetzer Institute's Campaign for Love and Forgiveness Web site offers Free Conversation Materials and information to purchase the films The Mystery of Love and The Power of Forgiveness.
